Dr. Hellmans areas of expertise include EHS and Product related Compliance, Sustainability and Product Quality. His experience includes over 35 years of Corporate work in a number of industrial sectors ranging from manufacturing to retail (Allied Chemical, General Electric, Bristol Myers-Squibb and Limited Brands). This experience has provided him with a unique opportunity to lead Compliance and Sustainability related activities in a number of different company environments and cultures. Toms consulting style is of a collaborative and coaching nature rather than directive. His objective is to build internal capacity in client companies while developing strategies to address the identified challenges and opportunities.
Detailed biography:
Tom obtained a B.A. in Chemistry from Williams College and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Pennsylvania State University. From 1970 to 1973 Tom worked for Union Carbide in Environmental Research and Development and simultaneously taught at West Virginia University. From 1973 to 1985, he worked for Allied Corporation. For the first 10 years, Tom had responsibility for EHS in Allieds Engineered Materials Section. In July 1984, he moved to the position of Director of Allieds Legislative and Regulatory Affairs dealing with environmental and technology matters in Washington, DC. From 1985 to 1991, Tom worked for General Electric as Corporate Manager of Environmental, Health and Safety Operations during which time he provided leadership support to GEs business units. In 1991, he joined Bristol-Myers Squibb Company as Vice President, Environmental Affairs/Occupational Health & Safety providing leadership and support to the Companys global EHS activities. In addition, Tom had overall responsibility for Compliance Assurance including FDA, EPA and OSHA related matters. In May of 1997, he was appointed Corporate Product Quality Officer.
In 2001, Tom joined Limited Brands, Inc. as Senior Vice President with enterprise-wide responsibility for compliance services which included FDA, CPSC, Customs, DOT, EPA and OSHA. In addition, he had responsibility for developing strategic positions with respect to technical and scientific issues.
In 2004, Tom was promoted to Executive Vice President, Compliance Services with expanded responsibility including Customs Compliance. He retired from that position in October of 2007. An additional aspect of his work at Limited Brands was his role as Culture Change Champion for Limited Logistics Services during the time that Limited Brands was undergoing a major culture shift to what is now called the Limited Way.
In 1992, Tom was appointed to the National Research Councils Water Science and Technology Board. In 1993, Tom became a member of the Board of the World Environment Center and in 1996 was elected Chairman. In April, 1999, Tom was the recipient of the 1999 Edward J. Cleary General Excellence Award, presented by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers in Washington, DC.
